Why is a Huf Haus So Unique?

A Huf Haus, both the names of the company and the building, is not your ordinary house that you see on any street. Essentially it is a kit house, custom made by the owners’ preferences and lifestyle, individually designed with a Huf Haus architect and prefabricated to the clients’ specifications in a Huf Haus factory near Cologne in Germany.  Based on the German Fachwerk design, a Huf Haus design focuses on access to abundant natural light throughout the house and spacious open plan flexible living space. The houses are known for their signature timber post and beam structure and even more popular after appearing on the popular property show, Grand Designs.

To begin the whole process, the buyer needs to purchase a plot of land with planning permission before the design process even starts. They can do this themselves or can opt for Huf Haus’s planning service in addition to design. Once this is complete, the designing process begins, allowing the buyer to customise the building to their needs.

Surprisingly, these strikingly contemporary-looking homes can be built in just one to two weeks, due to their prefabrication in Germany before construction begins. This trademark speed isn’t the only quality that causes people to spend millions on them. Their standout selling point is their innovative window design, which flood the interior with an abundance of natural light. At first sight you may think the house to be fragile but even a brick couldn’t break these triple glazed windows, used to create this greenhouse effect. Along with this, the building has eight layers of insulation keeping the property warm without needing as much heating as the average home. Huf Haus has always been energy efficient, but the homes are now close to zero carbon.

111 years ago, Johann Huf founded a sawmill and carpentry business in Germany’s Westerwald region. The family business, now in its third generation, had been designing these statement homes since 1972 but sales really spiked after an appearance on Channel 4. Today nearly 300 of them have been built in the UK.
